Der Beginn der Verehrung des hl. Nikolaus im Abendland setzt im Wesentlichen erst im Jahre 1087 ein, als Kaufleute aus dem s\u00fcditalienischen Bari seine Gebeine aus dem kleinasiatischen Myra raubten und in ihre Heimatstadt \u00fcberf\u00fchrten. Reliquiendiebstahl galt nicht als S\u00fcnde, da nach theologischer Ansicht Reliquien -nicht aber deren Fassungen- Gemeingut aller Christen sind. In Bari wurde \u00fcber dem Grab des Heiligen eine Basilika errichtet, welche bis heute ein gro\u00dfer Wallfahrtsort ist. Bemerkenswert ist, da\u00df die Russische Kirche (am 9. Mai) ein eigenes Fest der Reliquien\u00fcbertragung kennt und deshalb auch Ikonen gemalt wurden, welche die Ankunft der Kaufleute in Bari und den mitgef\u00fchrten Leichnam des hl. Nikolaus zeigen.<\/p>\n
The beginning of the St. Nicholas‘ veneration in the occident started basically in the year 1087, when merchants from Bari in Southern Italy more or less abducted and carried off the relics of St. Nicholas from Myra. The theft of relics was not considered to be a sin, because the theological opinion was that relics -without their encasements- were the common property of all Christian. In Bari a large basilica was built over the grave of the saint, which is one of the most important pilgrimage places of Christendom. It is notable that the Russian church also celebrates a feast of the translation (May 9).
