Symeon mit dem Jesuskind auf den Armen nimmt Bezug auf eines der zw\u00f6lf Hauptfeste des orthodoxen Kirchenjahres, der Hypapante (Begegnung), im Westen bekannt unter dem Titel &#8222;Darstellung Jesu im Tempel&#8220;. Vierzig Tage nach der Geburt ihres Sohnes musste Maria -nach j\u00fcdischem Brauch- ein Reinigungsopfer darbringen. Gem\u00e4\u00df dieser Vorschrift brachten Maria und Joseph ihren Sohn Jesus in den Tempel und reichten das vorgeschriebene Opfer dar. Symeon und Hanna erkannten in dem kleinen Jesusknaben den Erl\u00f6ser. Symeon stimmte daraufhin einen Lob- und Sterbegesang an: <em>&#8222;Nun l\u00e4sst Du, Herr, Deinen Knecht, wie Du gesagt hast, in Frieden scheiden. Denn meine Augen haben das Heil gesehen, das du vor allen V\u00f6lkern bereitet hast, ein Licht, das die Heiden erleuchtet, und Herrlichkeit f\u00fcr dein Volk Israel.<\/em> (Lukas 2, 22-32). Auf fr\u00fchen byzantinischen Ikonen tr\u00e4gt Maria meist das Jesuskind, w\u00e4hrend sp\u00e4ter oft Symeon den Jesusknaben in seinen Armen h\u00e4lt. Selten sind Einzeldarstellungen des greisen Symeon als Gottestr\u00e4ger.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The image of St. Symeon with the Infant Jesus\u00a0 refers to one of the twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, the Hypapante (meeting), known as the Presentation in the Temple. It occured at the time of Mary&#8217;s purification, forty days after giving birth. She and Joseph took the Christ Child to the Temple and presented him to the aged priest Symeon, who prophesied the redemption of the world by Jesus:\u00a0<em> &#8222;Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in  peace; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared  before the face of all peoples; a light for revelation to the nations,  and the glory of your people Israel&#8220;<\/em>. (Luke 2,22-32). Early Byzantine depictions tend to show the Child in his mother&#8217;s arms, while in later representations he is often held by Symeon.
