Unten ist der liegende Prophet Jesse zu sehen, aus dessem Körper ein Weinstock mit vielen sich windenden Ästen wächst. Auf den Zweigen sitzen Propheten, und oben ist die Gottesmutter mit ihrem Sohn Jesus abgebildet. In den Ostkirchen wird das Thema der Wurzel Jesse auf die Gottesmutter und ihre Bedeutung bei der Menschwerdung Christi hin ausgelegt. Die Schriften der abgebildeten Propheten verweisen auf die Inkarnation und das Mysterium der Erlösung.
The little wood-carving from Mount Athos or the Balkan area shows the rare motif of the Tree of Jesse. At the bottom is the recumbent figure of the prophet Jesse, from whose body rises a vine with symmetrically curving branches. Prophets are sitting at the arms and above the Mother of God and Christ are depicted. In the Eastern Churches the theme of the Tree of Jesse has a prophetic character, is associated with the Virgin and her role in the Incarnation. The prophets portrayed are those who foretold the Incarnation and the redemptive sacrifice.
