Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert ist in der russischen Ikonenmalerei das Motiv des halbfigurigen, geflügelten Christus Emmanuel bekannt, welcher die Hände vor der Brust überkreuz hält und einen achtzackigen, sonst Gott-Vater vorbehaltenen Nimbus trägt. Der Titulus lautet immer „Christus, das Gütige Schweigen“. Diese Christus-Engel-Darstellung geht auf Bibelstellen zurück, wie Jesaja 42,2: „Er schreit nicht und lärmt nicht und lässt seine Stimme nicht auf der Straße erschallen“, aber auch auf theologische, sich um den vorgeburtlichen Christus, den praeexistenten Logos, drehende Gedankengänge.
The motif of Christ Emmanuel in half-figure and with wings, who presents his hands crosswise in front of his bosom and who has a halo of eight points, is known in the Russian icon-painting since the 16th century. The title is always „Christ, The Blessed Silence“. This depiction of Christ as an angel is based on passages of the Bible, like Isaiah 42:2: “He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets“, but the icon also reflects theological thoughts about the pre-existence of Christ.
